Prostate Cancer

What is Prostate Cancer? As is usually the case for cancer, it involves a loss of control in terms of cell reproduction resulting in abnormal growth in the prostate. The prostate is part of the male reproductive system.

Although prostate cancer will not always show early symptoms, when it does some of the most common ones are trouble urinating, blood in the semen and or urine, erectile dysfunction, and possible discomfort in the pelvic area.

Prostate cancer is one of the most dangerous forms of cancer due to its capability of metastasizing to the bones and lymph nodes.

The American Urological Association ( ) recommends that men get their first prostate exam at the age of 40. Regular screenings are recommended starting at the age of 50.

The importance of a Prostate exam lies in its preventative nature. The sooner any abnormality is discovered the sooner the treatment can start and the higher the probabilities of a successful outcome.

How to detect the prostate cancer? There are two exams that are standard and fundamental for early detection of prostate cancer: Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) and the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE). “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of the PSA test along with a digital rectal exam (DRE) to help detect prostate cancer in men 50 years of age or older.” (

Prostate-Specific Antigens (PSA): antigens naturally produced by the male body. These antigens increase in numbers when there’s any abnormality.

In a PSA test, a blood sample is taken and analyzed for levels of PSA. In case of an abnormal result, further tests might be needed. PSA tests are also recommended for individuals with a history of cancer and for monitoring purposes for those who are recuperating from a cancer intervention procedure.

Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): a physical exam carried out by a physician where the prostate is evaluated through the rectum in order to check mainly for abnormal texture and size.
